With Recommended Shoreline Evacuation, Some Venture to Temporary Shelter

About 20 cots can be set up at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

Westport emergency management officials have advised shoreline residents to evacuate to higher ground because of predicted flooding.

Water was reported over roads in the Saugatuck Shores area as well as along Soundview Drive and Hillspoint Road in the Compo Beach and Compo Mill areas, according to an article on WestportNow.

At the advice, some ventured to the town's temporary emergency shelter at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. Director Susan Pfister said some families showed up and then went to stay at the Westport Inn, which was reaching capacity.

The senior center has about 20 cots, with room for more. Pfister said cots were being set up for one family whose home was damaged by a tree falling on it.

She expects more people to arrive for a night's stay if trees continue to fall on area homes. However, she said many people would probably remain home, if possible, because of dangerous driving conditions.

The storm has caused many downed trees and power outages throughout Westport. About 5,000 people are currently without power.

The storm turned deadly when one person was killed in an accident where a tree fell on a car on Park Lane. Three other occupants of the vehicle were injured and transported to Norwalk Hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
