Westport Historical Society Presents A Tree Grows in Winslow

Learn how to identify and care for the trees on your property while strolling through beautiful Winslow Park on Sunday, Sept. 29 from 2:00 to 3:30 P.M.  The walk with professional arborist Ben Sykas is being sponsored by the Westport Historical Society.

Along the way, Sykas will discuss the history of the 29-acre former estate of New York banker Richard Henry Winslow, as well as such tree identification basics as the difference between compound and simple leaves and good versus bad pruning. And if the weather is favorable between now and the end of the month, you will also see some of the trees in their autumn glory. Sykas says one variety in particular, the sweet gum, is spectacular when its leaves turn.

Winslow is especially noteworthy for its lindens, a historically popular city tree, and its stately European beeches, according to Sykas, a licensed arborist with a degree from Eastern Connecticut State University.

So, if you’re among those who mistakenly refer to all evergreens as pines, or are just a tree lover, join the Winslow walk with Sykas. And just so you know, pines are a genus of the much larger evergreen group of trees.
