Driver in Rollover Escapes Serious Injury

Police credit seat belt use.

Police say the driver of a car that rolled over this afternoon escaped serious injury because the unidentified person was wearing a seat belt.

Emergency personnel responded to the crash at Post Road East and Compo Road South at 4:33.  They found a Chevy Cavalier on its roof and leaning on a Saab station wagon, with the driver of the Cavalier hanging upside down by the vehicles seatbelt, police said.  Firefighters worked to stabilize the vehicle, and remove the  occupant onto a backboard and stretcher for transport by Westport EMS to Norwalk Hospital with minor injures.

Two other parked vehicles in the parking lot of the Compo Shopping Center received minor damage as the Cavalier bounced off of them as it rolled.  The Cavalier was righted and placed on a flat bed from Riverside Service Center for removal and the other three vehicles were able to drive away.
