Westport, Fairfield's Bravest Extinguish I-95 Car Fire

The fire was reported at 7:22 p.m. on Thursday.

The Westport Fire Department, in conjunction with Fairfield firefighters, extinguished a car fire on I-95 northbound Thursday just before Exit 19. 

The Fairfield Emergency Communications Center alerted Westport emergency personnel to the fire at 7:22 p.m. Westport Engines Five and Two responded to the call along with Engine Four, Ladder One, and the Shift Commander from Fairfield Fire Department. 

Responding Fairfield units traveling southbound indicated a single car on fire on the right shoulder just prior to exit 19. Westport Engine Five arrived on scene confirming the initial reports with Westport Engine Two arriving a few seconds later, according to a release from the Westport Fire Department.

Westport Engine Five stretched a single hand line and extinguished the fire quickly with backup from Engine Two. Fairfield firefighters arrived on scene shortly thereafter and personnel from both departments worked together to ensure full extinguishment of the fire and to overhaul the scene rapidly. 

Northbound I-95 traffic was backed up for an extended period due to the fire, according to state police on scene.

The last Westport Fire Department unit cleared the scene at 7:54 p.m. with Fairfield Engine 4 remaining on scene for a short time to assist with the tow. 

There were no injuries associated with the car fire reported.
