Westport Man Charged With Impersonating a Police Officer

Man claimed to be a member of the NYPD during a traffic stop in Westport.

Donald Werner, 65, of Westport, was charged with impersonating a police officer, second-degree forgery, operating an unregistered vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, misuse of plates and operating a vehicle with out of state plates beyond 30 days on Sept. 28 at 10:45 a.m.

According to police, Werner was arrested following a motor vehicle stop for misuse of registration plates. During the stop Werner showed an officer an NYPD Auxiliary badge and identification card and verbally stated that he was a member of the Auxiliary Marine Unit.

Due to the quality of the ID the officer questioned its validity and contacted members of NYPD who determined it was not consistent with what the department issued. Subsequent investigation found that Werner had been terminated from the NYPD Auxiliary Police in 2010 and was not to posses any items that identified him as an officer, according to police.
