Murphy, Bysiewicz to Face Off in Westport

The two Democrats, vying for the nomination to run for U.S. Senate, will debate on Wednesday.

It remains to be seen which candidate will earn the Democrats' nomination to run for Joe Lieberman's Senate seat. In order to help voters decide which candidate they prefer, the Westport Democratic Town Committee, in conjunction with the Fairfield County Democrats, will be hosting a debate between the two candidates on Wednesday in Westport.

“This will be the first debate for Chris Murphy and Susan Bysiewicz after the convention and I am eager to hear them discuss many topics, including the economy, health care and foreign affairs as well as local issues," said Barbara Reynolds, chairman of the Weston DTC, in a press release.

Murphy, who's represented Connecticut's 5th Congressional District since 2007, is the endorsed candidate of the Connecticut Democratic Party for United States Senate, according to the press release. Bysiewicz served as Connecticut's Secretary of the State from 1999 to 2011 and received sufficient votes at the State Convention this past Saturday to primary for the seat. The primary is scheduled for August 14.

Dr. Gary Rose, Chairman of the Department of Government and Politics at Sacred Heart University will be the debate's moderator, according to the release.

"Dr. Rose will be an excellent moderator and brings a high level of expertise to the subject matter,” Reynolds said.

The debate—which is free and open to the public—will take place on Wednesday, May 23 at Westport Town Hall and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
