Republicans Balk at Decision to Close Sherwood Island For Obama Visit

"It is outrageous that the Democrats turn Sherwood Isle into a personal heliport for the President so that he can be ferried back and forth to hobnob with millionaires and billionaires for the day," House Republican Leader Larry Cafero told the Citizen.

House Republican Leader Larry Cafero (R-Norwalk) is reportedly criticizing the state's decision to Monday to allow its use as a "personal heliport" for visit and Stamford.

"It is the arrogance of power and crass partisanship to shut down Sherwood Isle at the height of the summer vacation season and dislodge all these families," Rep. Cafero told the Norwalk Citizen. "It is outrageous that the Democrats turn Sherwood Isle into a personal heliport for the president so that he can be ferried back and forth to hobnob with millionaires and billionaires for the day."

On Monday the President attended a major followed by , where he mingled with big Hollywood names including "Dark Knight Rises" actress Anne Hathaway; Joanne Woodward, widow of actor Paul Newman; writer Aaron Sorkin; and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

State Sen. Toni Boucher (R-Wilton), whose district includes Sherwood Island, told the CT Post last week that it was "unfathomable that someone would make that kind of decision. The perception will be that they're taking advantage of a public park for a private purpose. And they call Mitt Romney an elitist."

Sen. Boucher reportedly suggested that nearby Sikorsky Airport may have been a better place for the President to land.
