Kick-Start Your Workout: Commit to Change!

We all need a fitness kickstart now and again to stay on track and move forward. Hit your reset button and be your personal best! Need inspiration? Read JoyRide's Rhodie Lorenz's tips.

While our minds are the most powerful tool we have, we don't go places by merely thinking, we go places by doing. Thinking and doing are two different things. We all feel unmotivated at times. We get excited about planning to be our best and most fit sevles, but what we want to happen and what actually happen are sometimes two entirely different things.

Setting goals and meeting them requires a strategy. Break it down, make a list, and take off bite sized chunks.  Here's one way to start:

1. Set one goal: I usually have a hard time narrowing down my lengthy list of self-improvement resolutions and goals: patience, improving attention to detail, being present, understanding fantasy football, trying golf, and letting go. I am self aware enough to know that if I tried to tackle too many of these goals at once, I would rapidly become overwhelmed and likely throw in the towel. But, ask me to pick one goal, such as taking a deep breath to improve my patience level that's a bite size goal.

2. Find inspiration: The self-help section of Barnes & Noble isn't the only place to find inspiration. In fact, you can seek  and discover inspiration everywhere. Personally, music, books, and people inspire me.  Anyone who has achieved success motivates me to do the same.  Think of what makes you want to become your best self.

3. Commit publicly:  Announce your goal to your friends and family.  Sharing your goals and resolutions makes you accountable and helps keep you motivated to stay the course. No one likes to quit in front of an audience.  Spread the word!

4. Seek support: No one ascends alone.  Friends and family are usually our network of fans who believe in us, even when we start doubting ourselves.  We achieve great things with belief in ourselves and have our dearest fans cheering us on!  Call Mom, she will always tell you that you can do it! Text me! I will do the same!

5. Think about benefits, not the difficulties:  A common problem we sometimes have is thinking about how hard something is.  An indoor cycling class is so difficult! I am not in good enough shape to take a JoyRide! Instead of thinking about how hard it is, think about what you will get out of it: lose weight, build confidence, feel great, get stronger, find fortune, and fame, etc.  Congratulate yourself on small successes and stay positive.

6. Do your personal best: Whatever your 100% looks like, give it. It feels great to find your personal best. Whether you are painting a landscape, running a race, playing an instrument, or completing your first indoor cycling class without turning green, do it with gusto and give it all of you've got!

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.  At JoyRide we believe strongly that excellence is a habit.  Why wait? Sign up today for a JoyRide class and create healthy habits for the new year!
