Cyberbullying Workshop for Middle School

Workshops will be held for middle school and high school students to train them to become “Cyberallies” and stand up to online bullying.

 “Funded by a generous grant from AT&T, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is launching a new program on cyber-bullying for middle and high school students called, CyberALLY,” said Daignault.

 “Westport has been selected to be the first community in Fairfield County to participate in the program and ADL is working with Westport Youth Services to launch the program this spring.  Middle school and high school students from Westport are invited to attend a three-hour workshop facilitated by the ADL, where they will learn how to identify and help to prevent cyber-bullying by becoming cyberallies,” she said.

 The middle school CyberALLY training is Wednesday, April 27 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Toquet. Hall and the high school CyberALLY training is Tuesday, May 24 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Town Hall.

 In a continuing effort to educate young people on the causes and effects of online behavior, Westport Youth Services and the Westport Youth Commission’s iMentor program are partnering with the Anti-Defamation League and AT&T to offer further training to middle and high school students on this important topic.

ADL’s CyberALLY Workshop

  • Increases understanding of cyber-bullying;
  • Promotes safety and inclusion in online forums as part of a broader strategy to create safe schools;
  • Explores connections between cyber-bullying, bias-motivated behavior and online activities;
  • Provides students with the skills needed to become “cyberallies” to others.

The CyberALLY training program was created by the Anti-Defamation League’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute as an anti-bias educational tool to help schools develop a comprehensive approach to identify and address cyber-bullying.  For more information on the CyberALLY program visit www.adl.org/education/cyberbullying/.

Interested Westport students in grades 6-12 can register to participate in the CyberALLY trainings by contacting Elaine Daignault at 203-341-1165 or elained@westportct.gov.
