WestportREADS: Steele Discusses Stereotypes in 'Whistling Vivaldi'

Claude Steele, a social psychology professor and Provost of Columbia University, best known for his work on stereotype threat, will discuss his book "Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us," as part of Westport READS at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, in McManus Room. The book is an insider's look at his groundbreaking findings on stereotypes and identity.

Steele's conclusions shed new light on a host of social phenomena, from the racial and gender gaps in standardized test scores to the belief in the superior athletic prowess of black men. Through insights into how we form our senses of identity, plans for mitigating the negative effects of 'stereotype threat' and reshaping our identities can be made.

Books will be available for purchase and signing. A percentage of all purchases will benefit the Library.
