GFA Boys Hold Off Christian Heritage, 70-64

Greenwich's Sean Obi tied a school record with 37 points and also grabbed 20 rebounds as the Dragons improved to 17-3

Greenwich's Sean Obi scored 37 points Tuesday to tie his own school record as the Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team posted a 70-64 non-league victory over Christian Heritage.

Obi also grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked five shots for the Dragons, who improved to 17-3 following their 14th consecutive victory. Despite Obi's stat line, however, this was not an easy win for GFA, which led 35-22 at halftime.

"There will be a lot of story lines missed as people rightfully focus on Sean’s amazing stat line, but it took everything that all of my guys could bring to get this win," Dragons coach Doug Scott said.

After scoring 79 points in its last game against Choate, Christian Heritage was held 15 below that mark on Tuesday.

Darien's Pat Ryan limited Bryan Jones to 15 points, including only five field goals. Jones came into the game averaing 22.8 points, one of the top Prep school marks in the state.

"I’m not sure anyone but his coach could truly appreciate what Pat Ryan just did for us," Scott said. "We had him play one of the state’s top scorers in solo man-to-man. For him to be able to hold that much talent to just five baskets was really huge for us."

Greenwich's Hunter Eggers, playing with a sore leg, added nine points for GFA while Matt Tate, also of Greenwich, contributed eight. Westport's Brien Comey pulled down 11 rebounds.

"Matt Tate got no rest," Scott added. "Hunter Eggers gutted through a bad wheel."

Aaron Bartly scored 18 points to pace Christian Heritage, which dropped to 11-13.

GFA hosts Kingswood-Oxford (West Hartford) on Friday before beginning play in the FAA tourney on Feb 22. The New England championship tournament starts on Feb 29.

"The foundation of this 14-game win streak is a terrific commitment to team defense, game in and game out," Scott said.
