GFA Boys Stunned By King In FAA Playoffs

The 64-62 loss to the Vikings snaps a 15-game winning streak for GFA, which falls to 18-4

With a 15-game winning streak to end the regular season, the Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team took plenty of momentum into Wednesday's FAA quarterfinal against the Kings School.

But that momentum went for naught as the Dragons were shocked by the seventh-seeded Vikings 64-62 in Westport.

Francois Gilbert wriggled free for the game-winning layup with seven seconds left. GFA did not get a time out until four seconds left and King denied a final shot attempt

"All good things must come to an end sometime," said GFA coach Doug Scott, whose team dropped to 18-4 after suffering its first defeat since Jan. 15.

Greenwich's Hunter Eggers led GFA with 12 points while Greenwich's Sean Obi added 10 points and 18 rebounds, his 44th consecutive double-double.

New Haven's Tremont Waters added 11 points Westport's Brien Comey and Darien's Patrick Ryan each had 10 for the Dragons, who held a 30-28 lead at halftime.

"It was a great game, close throughout," Scott said. "GFA led for much of it , but could never put King away."

King's Drew Sawyer of Norwalk was unstoppable for most of the afternoon, finishing with 31 points. Matt Reggina added 18 for the Vikings (8-15), who snapped a nine-game losing streak.

“Kudos to coach Dobbs," Scott added. "They were really well prepared. They got Sawyer and Reggina their shots and their defenses scrambled us into a season-high 20 turnovers.”

In Friday's semifinals, King will face No. 3 seed Rye Country Day, which defeated No. 6 Brunswick 66-62 on Wednesday. Top seed and defending champion Hamden Hall will face Masters School in the other semifinal.
