GFA Boys Tie School Mark With Eighth Straight Victory

Darien's Patrick Ryan blocks potential game-winning 3-pointer at buzzer as Dragons defeat Masters School 63-61 to improve to 11-3

The Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team edged the Masters School 63-61 Monday evening in Westport to match a school record set last season with its eighth straight victory.

Sean Obi scored 21 points and grabbed 25 rebounds for the Dragons, who overcame the absence of fellow Greenwich resident Hunter Eggers (foot injury) to improve to 11-3 overall and 8-3 in the FAA. Masters dropped to 7-5 and 4-4.

GFA solidified its hold on second place in the FAA behind Hamden Hall, which is undefeated in conference play.

The Dragons prevailed when Darien's Patrick Ryan blocked a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Ryan recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, converted 9-of-10 free throws and shadowed Masters' top scorer Greg Brathwaite throughout the game.  Brathwaite scored 22 points, but he has surpassed 30 on a number of occasions this season.

"That game should have been sponsored by the American Heart Association," GFA coach Doug Scott said. "The were a lot of kids out there doing everything that they could to win. Masters could not shake us when they made their runs, and we could not shake them when we made ours.”

Seventh-grader Tremont Waters of New Haven started in place of Eggers and dished out six assists while committing only three turnovers against Masters’ relentless traps and pressure defense.

Stamford freshman Zach Baines grabbed 14 rebounds for GFA and Greenwich's Matt Tate handed out 10 assists.

On Wednesday, GFA, ranked third in New England, hosts top-ranked Hamden Hall at 6 p.m. Hamden Hall rallied in the second half to defeat the Dragons in the teams' first meeting on Dec. 14.
