Staples Athletes Honored by CIAC

Wreckers' second baseman named the school's male scholar-athlete of the year

Jack Hennessy, who captained three sports at Staples, has been named the school's male representative in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) and Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) honors program.

Staples volleyball player Taylor Ross has been named the female representative by the same groups.

Each year, two seniors from each high school in the state — one boy and one girl — are honored by the CIAC and CAS as scholar-athletes.

Award winners must exhibit exemplary athletic and academic careers; personal standards and achievements that are models for others, and high levels of integrity, self-discovery and courage.

Hennessy,  an 11-time varsity letter winner and three-year varsity soccer starter, helped lead the Wreckers to one state and two FCIAC soccer championships.

In addition, he has been part of two FCIAC baseball championship teams and is gunning for a third title this spring.  Staples is 13-1 and tied for first place in the FCIAC heading into Thursday's game at Wilton.

A starter on the baseball club since his freshman season, he was the MVP of last year's FCIAC tournament and also won  numerous indoor track titles.

On the field, Hennessy is an honors student and a sports editor of the school's student newspaper, Inklings.

Hennessy and Ross were honored recently at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.
