Staples Baseball Crushes Ridgefield In FCIAC Tuneup
Wreckers rout Tigers, 15-4, for 14th straight victory.
If anyone thought the Staples High School baseball team would take it easy after clinching the top seed for the FCIAC playoffs, they were sadly mistaken.
David Speer won his sixth game of the season and the Wreckers drilled three home runs Wednesday en route to a 15-4 victory over Ridgefield for their 14th consecutive win.
Speer wasn't at his best but improved to 6-0. He also was backed by a 16-hit attack that included three home runs.

After Ridgefield starter Ryan Callanan struck out the side in the bottom of the first, the Wreckers (18-1, 16-1) went to work.
In the second inning with two outs, a single by Staples first baseman Colin McCarthy sparked a rally. Callanan gave up a walk and three long singles, which produced four runs for the Wreckers.

Building on the momentum from the second, the Wreckers went on a scoring spree in the third, bringing home seven runs on five hits, including a stand-up double by Pete Conroy and a homer by McCarthy.
Callanan was relieved with two outs in the third, but subsequent Tiger relievers Sean Cobelli, Greg Mascotti, and Mike Devivo didn't fare any better against the Wreckers' onslaught.
Ridgefield tallied two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, but its offense never posed a serious threat
The Wreckers complete their regular season Friday at Trinity Catholic.
