Staples Boys Teams Have Had A Dominating Spring

Four Wreckers' teams are still unbeaten this season

Despite the stunning loss suffered by the previously undefeated Staples boys lacrosse team in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC  playoffs Saturday, no school in the state can match the success enjoyed by the Wreckers' male sports programs this  spring.

Four of the Wreckers' six squads (volleyball, tennis, golf and outdoor track)  are still undefeated, the lacrosse unit is now 16-1 and baseball takes an 18-2 record into the FCIAC tournament.

Here's a brief look at each team's season to date and their upcoming schedule.

Lacrosse -- After completing the first undefeated season in school history, the Wreckers fell to St. Joseph, 10-7, at home on Saturday.

Baseball -- Staples is seeking its third straight FCIAC title and earned the top seed for the FCIAC playoffs. The Wreckers host Westill on Monday in a rematch of last season's FCIAC championship. Westhill handed Staples one of its two losses this year (Trinity Catholic was the other.)

Tennis -- Staples finished the season 16-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state. The Wreckers host Westhill on Monday in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs.

Volleyball -- The Wreckers went 17-0 in the regular season, extending their match winning streak to 97. They won every match this season by scores of 3-0 except 3-1 and 3-2 wins over Ridgefield. Staples faces Greenwich in the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs on Wednesday. The Wreckers have won seven straight FCIAC titles.

Golf -- Even without Andrew Gai, an all-stater last season who elected not to play high school golf this spring to concentrate on junior tournaments, the wreckers (12-0) are undefeated this spring. They have big matches this week against Greenwich and Fairfield Prep,

Outdoor track -- The Wreckers completed an undefeated 10-0 regular season and complete in the FCIAC championships Tuesday at Danury.
