Staples' Kelly Nominated For BlueStreak Sports Training Player Of the Week Award

The sophomore rushed for more than 100 yards in Friday's 34-14 victory at Ridgefield

Staples'  Nick Kelly has been nominated for the Fairfield County Player of the Week Award, sponsored by BlueStreak Sports Training and powered by Patch.com and the FCIAC Football Blog.

The sophomore running back rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on just six carries, as the Wreckers defeated Ridgefield, 34-14, to improve to 3-0.  Kelly also had a 55-yard reception on a key 3rd-and-19 play when Staples was clinging to a 17-14 lead early in the fourth quarter

The Player of the Week candidates are nominated by Patch.com based on its weekly coverage of high school football, and the voting is conducted by the FCIAC Football Blog.

Write-in candidates from all schools were accepted up to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4. However, not enough write-in candidates were received to warrant Week 3 inclusion.

Here is some info on the other nominees:  

The senior running back rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the 2-1 Mustangs' 31-7 victory over Bassick. He scored on runs of of 58, 74 and 11 yards and has rushed for nearly 400 yards in the last two games.

The all-state senior receiver scored touchdowns in three different ways in the Rams' 35-0 triumph over Faiirfield Ludlowe. He returned an interception 27 yards, took back a punt for 40 yards and caught a 53-yard TD reception — all in the first quarter, when undefeated New Canaan (3-0) jumped out to a 28-0 lead.

The sophomore running back rushed for 166 yards, as the undefeated Blue Wave rallied for a 13-10 Homecoming Day victory over St. Joseph. He scored the winning touchdown on a 3-yard run with 4:54 remaining as Darien (3-0) rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit.
