Nikki Bukovsky scored 17 points Friday as the girls basketball team won a battle of FCIAC playoff contenders with a 42-40 victory over Westhill in Westport.

Jess Coelho added nine points for Staples, which improved to 10-6 overall and 9-5 in the FCIAC. The Wreckers were coming off a 53-48 win over Wilton in which they outscored the Warriors 12-0 over the final three minutes to snap a three-game losing streak.

Staples built a 14-10 lead after the first quarter, then allowed only one point in the second period in extending its margin to 21-15 at the half.

The Wreckers took a 35-30 lead into the final quarter, then held on for the victory.

Megan D'Alessandro scored 16 points and Steph Roones added 15 for the Vikings, who dropped to 9-7 and 8-6.

With two weeks left in the regular season, Staples is in a three-way tie for sixth in the FCIAC standings with Norwalk and Stamford.

Westhill has dropped into a three-way tie for ninth with Fairfield and Darien, who both were losers on Friday.

Chris Walters and Tony Dobbinson combined for 42 points Friday as the Westhill boys basketball team remained hot with a 67-58 victory over Staples.

It was the sixth straight win for the Vikings, who improved to 10-4 and 9-3.

Westhill prevailed despite a huge game from Staples' Peter Rankowitz, who poured in 30 points and grabbed seeven rebounds,

Michael Argosh added 14 points for the Wreckers, who dropped back to the .500 mark at 7-7 and 6-6.

The contest was close early with the teams battling to an 11-11 tie after the first quarter and the Wreckers grabbing a 27-24 lead at halftime,

However, Westhill grabbed control in the third quarter, outscoring the Wreckers 26-16 to take a 50-43 lead into the final period.

Westhill holds the fifth spot in the FCIAC standings while Staples is tied for 10th, one game out of a playoff spot.

The injury-depleted Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team suffered a 10-1 loss to Trinity Catholic on Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

It was the sixth straight loss for the Wreckers, who dropped to 6-7. And it doesn't get any easy as S-W-S plays at New Canaan on Wednesday.
