The Staples girls soccer team just missed the playoffs in the FCIAC, finishing ninth in the regular season. But playing in arguably the state's toughest league, certainly prepared for the Wreckers for their state tournament opener on Thursday.

Abbey Lake recorded a hat trick as the 20th-seeded Wreckers posted a 3-1 victory over No. 13 New Milford.

The win set up a showdown on Saturday against defending state champion Shelton, which defeated Fairfield Ludlowe 2-0 on Thursday.

After taking a pass from freshman Chloe Rosenfield, Lake beat two defenders and slid a shot inside the far post to open the scoring late in the first half.

Five minutes into the second half, Abby Fagan set up Lake for a 2-0. At the 15-minute mark, the Green Wave cut the deficit in half, but Lake answered just two minutes later to restore the two-goal margin.

A total of eight FCIAC teams advanced to the second round Thursday - Darien (which defeated Fairfield Warde), Ridgefield, Greenwich and Westhill (which beat Danbury) and New Canaan in Class LL, Wilton in Class L and St. Joseph in Class M.

The only other team FCIAC team to lose on Thursday was Fairfield Ludlowe. In non head-to-head matchups, the FCIAC went 6-1 with Ridgefield and Staples winning games as lower seeds.

Dethroned as three-time FCIAC champions, the Staples boys soccer team begins a quest for a 13th state title on Friday when the 11th-seeded Wreckers host No. 22 Manchester at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Class LL tourament.

If Staples (12-3-4), which fell to Trumbull in the FCIAC final on Friday, 2-0, advances, it could be looking at a state championship rematch with Farmington in the second round on Saturday (2 p.m.)

The Indians dethroned Staples as the Class LL state champions last season with a 2-1 victory.

Farmington, seeded sixth for the second straight year, opens defense of its state crown against No. 23 New Britain on Thursday

It's unfortunate that perennial state powers Farmington and Staples would have to meet so early in the tournament but the Wreckers have a relatively low seed.

In each of the past two seasons, they were the No. 5 seed. Staples won its most recent state championship in 2009 with a 4-0 win over New Milford in the finals.

The Staples football team (7-0) can clinch a berth in the FCIAC championship game with a victory at winless Westhill  on Saturday (1:30).

The Wreckers will be without top running back Joey Zelkowitz, (800 yards) who separated a shoulder in last week's 35-17 victory over Fairfield Warde.

Staples trailed 17-14 at the intermission but scored 21 unaswered points in the second half, marking the second week the Wreckers rallied from a halftime deficit.

Westhill dropped to 0-8 with a 33-6 loss at Wilton last week. Westhill has lost only one game by fewer than 10 points, a 28-22 defeat to Trinity Catholic in their season opener.

A victory would send Staples to its second FCIAC championship game in three years. The Wreckers defeated Bridgeport Central in 2009 in their most recent appearance.

Staples' contest against Hall in the first round of the Class L field hockey state tournament has been postponed one day and will be played in West Hartford on Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Staples girls volleyball team, which received a bye in the first round, will take on New Canaan, a 3-1 winner over Trumbull on Thursday, in the second round on Saturday (7 p.m.).

One Westport team -- the Westport sixth grade North - has made it to the semifinals of the Fairfield County Football League playoffs, which will be played this weekend.
