'It Was Only Their Man-of-the-Year Issue, Wasn't It?'

The day's best comments from Patch account-holders in our Fairfield County towns.

MONROE: "We are all Mom enough no matter what direction we choose, and any time you see a happy, thriving kid, he or she is living proof of that." Susan wrote this in response to "Patch Back" columnist Lisa Bigelow's view of Time magazine's controversial cover featuring Jamie Lynne Grumet breastfeeding her three-year-old son. NEW CANAAN: "Choosing how to raise children is feminism and another woman judging proponents of La Leche or attachment parenting is just like men trying to appeal abortion rights, trying to control women's bodies and their ultimate freedom: reproductive rights which morphs into parenting." kim wrote her response to the same article NEW CANAAN: "He is rude, unpleasant, and ineffective." Joey wrote this in his review …

Bridgeport Diocese: May Take 8 Months to Install New Bishop

A group of "consultors" will meet on Friday to choose a temporary administrator, according to the Connecticut Post.

As Bishop William E. Lori prepares to be formally installed as the 16th Archbishop of Baltimore on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Bridgeport says it may take up to eight months or more to announce his replacement, according to the Connecticut Post. Brian Wallace told the Post that "the church works in its own time" and it waited until Bishop Lori permanently left Bridgeport before meeting to choose a temporary administrator. A group of "consulters" will meet on Friday. Three individuals — Monsignor Jerald Doyle, Chancellor Anne O. McCrory and Monsignor Kevin Royal — are currently in charge of the diocese's daily operations and Wallace said that there is a good chance Doyle will be chosen as temporary administrator. Wallace …

I Am Mom Enough

In this first of a series, the author examines the intersection of hyper-parenting and feminism. Where do we go from here?

In another shocking example of poor journalistic judgment, the current Time Magazine cover of an attractive mother breastfeeding her three-year-old son stoked intense debate among mothers across the nation just in time for Mother’s Day. The cover, reading “Are you Mom enough?” invites the reader to learn about the unorthodox childcare advice administered by longtime parenting guru Dr. William Sears. Dr. Sears, who recommends a technique called attachment parenting, advises a host of techniques designed to foster—he says—a safe and secure childrearing environment. The attachment parenting mother breastfeeds on demand until the child self-weans, sometimes not until kindergarten. The mother wears the young baby in a sling—nearly all day, as …

To start, Ms. Bigelow’s writing is not rhetoric-free, frequently attempts to persuade, strays from conservative principles and is not always calm. She also sometimes overgeneralizes and tends to narcissism. The statement that the cover “slapped everyone in the face” is an overgeneralization and violent. Professor Badinter’s book and how it relates to “Fairfield County’s competitive mom elite” …   more ›

Westport SportsBeat: Things I'm Thinking ...

I'm thinking about all the great accomplishments by players and teams from our southwestern CT Patch towns.

[Note: Want your photos and/or write-ups from Westport youth or recreational sports featured on Westport Patch? Here's how!] I'm thinking the Cheshire boys volleyball team realizes they're on the verge of doing something special. A year ago, they had a perfect season, going 22-0 in route to a state championship. Behind 6'10" senior Nate Howard, the Rams haven't lost this year, increasing their winning streak to a remarkable 34 straight games. I'm thinking that Shayna Delaney of Pomperaug is authoring one of the best seasons of any player in the history of girls lacrosse in Connecticut. She scored a total of 20 goals in her first two games and still hasn't been stopped. Delaney has ripped the back of the net an incredible 96 times for the …

Westport Eye on the Beltway: Himes Wonders What's Next

And, Lieberman talks with CNN about the Taliban.

BLUMENTHAL: In an interview with The Daily Campus, the senator expressed his support for the Know Before You Owe Private Lender Act, which would require private lenders to inform prospective student borrowers of all of their loan options, "so people don’t leap into committing." LIEBERMAN: Following the death of a Afghan peacemaker in Kabul on Sunday, the senator told CNN that the Taliban "is not interested in peace talks," according to GovExec.com. Lieberman also said that the U.S. should "continue to put pressure" on the Taliban to engage in these talks. HIMES: The congressman used Twitter to ponder what's coming this week in Congress' 2012 session: "Back in DC. Last week, GOP saved a non-existent $20 bn from TBTF banks and eliminated a…

Rosa seems to believe as long as there are taxpayers, a rapidly dwindling number under her and Obama's regime, that the U.S. government cannot go bankrupt! Does she have any clue of how fast we are following Greece and Spain down that road??! As if paying for people's diapers wasn't ridiculous enough, now she expects the 50% of Americans still paying income taxes to cover the cost of every …   more ›

'I Still Don't Know What the Story in Time is Even About'

The day's best comments from Patch account-holders in our Fairfield County towns.

Ryan Bulson wrote this in response to this week's Readers' Choice poll for best dance studio in Brookfield. DARIEN: "After all this talk of the cover in the media, I still don't know what the story in Time is even about." Lisa Wilson Grant wrote this in response to this week's "Patch In" column about Time magazine's controversial cover featuring Jamie Lynne Grumet breastfeeding her three-year-old son. NEW CANAAN: "My last word on breastfeeding. Bottle for baby. Breast for daddy. Next." stella bella also responded this week's "Patch In." WILTON: "...Asking the media to stop suckling at the teat of advertising…

Mother Knows Breast

Here we go again—the real issue at the center of any debate over 'modern motherhood' is exploitation.

You don’t want to look at it, but you can’t look away. God forbid your children see it, what will happen when they view such a corruptible, sensational image?! Oh my, it’s a breast! With a child old enough to walk, talk and ask for food attached to it. A child doing what children are meant to do. Getting attention. That’s right, the biggest—perhaps only—winners in this cover story on breastfeeding and attachment parenting are Time magazine’s publicity, marketing and circulation departments. That’s what the cover image was designed to do: Get attention. And it has gotten lots of attention. Blogs, news websites, network news shows...you name it, everyone has weighed in on the 'controversial' articles and accompanying photos. It's been …
