Driver Asleep at the Wheel Gets DUI in Westport

Police found the man asleep at the wheel with his safety belt on.

 

Westport police officers responded to the intersection of Sherwood Island Connector and Post Road East on a report of a person sleeping in a stopped vehicle early Saturday morning, according to an arrest report.

The officers found 34-year-old Moises Bonilla, of Bridgeport, asleep with his safety belt on. The keys were in the ignition and the engine was idling while the vehicle was still in gear, police said.

"When Bonilla woke up, his speech was slurred and the officer could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath," the police report stated.

Bonilla failed the field sobriety test and was taken into custody. He submitted to the breath test with the following results: .201 and .190, police said. He posted a $1,000 surety bond and was released. He is due in Norwalk Superior Court on January 31.
