Erratic Driver Nailed for DUI on I-95 in Westport

After swerving over three lanes on I-95, Westport police initiated a traffic stop in order to speak with the suspicious driver.

 

charged Yvonne Dehaas-Ferris, 45, of Fairfield, just before midnight May 6 with operating under the influence, failure to obey control signal and failure to drive in the proper lane after an officer saw her vehicle stopped completely over the stop bar at the intersection of Park Street and Saugatuck Avenue while she was waiting for the overhead traffic signal to change, police said.

The vehicle was completely over the bar painted on the roadway and her vehicle was in the intersection, according to police. When the light turned green, Dehaas-Ferris entered I-95 northbound.  As the she entered the highway she accelerated rapidly and changed from the acceleration lane across all lanes of traffic into the left lane, police said.

The officer saw her vehicle weaving in the left lane and she was eventually stopped by police between exits 18 and 19. While speaking with the Dehaas-Ferris, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol on her breath, police said. The officer also noticed Dehaas-Ferris had red, glassy eyes and was slurring her speech.

Dehaas-Ferris failed the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. She submitted to a breath test with the following results: .208 and .216. She was later released after posting $500 bond. She is due in court May 17.
