Police Warn Residents Following Westport, Fairfield County Burglaries

Westport, along with several other communities in Lower Fairfield County and Westchester County, has been experiencing residential burglaries in areas along the Merritt Parkway.

The burglaries all shared a common operating method as the suspects targeted homes that appeared unoccupied with an accumulation of mail or newspapers, indicating an empty home.

In addition, the incidents all took place overnight or in the early morning hours over the weekend.

Police say the suspects took steps to defeat the alarm systems within the home in order to avoid detection and to take an extended period of time searching the house for valuables.

Residents are reminded to:

  • Hold mail or newspaper delivery while away for extended periods.
  • Keep some lights on in the home. Timers on a few lamps or motion activated exterior lights provide the appearance of an occupied dwelling.
  • Advise your neighbors or family members that you will be away and ask them to check your home so cars are at the home at various times.
  • Lock your doors and set your alarm including motion detectors.
  • If you hear something or see something out of place on your street or at a neighbors home, call police and let us verify the person's intentions and reason for being there.
  • Write down vehicle descriptions and plate numbers of strange cars in your neighborhood.
  • Be cognizant of construction type noises in the early morning or overnight hours and call police immediately if any are detected.
  • Do not keep all of your jewelry and valuables in the same location in your home.
